A great defensive display saw Fiji edge Samoa 49-43 in their LICI Pacific netball series match last night.

The six goals win was a result of a very competitive game where the gutsy Samoans tried their best to deny the Fijians their second win.

National captain Mere Neiliko and Matila Waqanidrola stood out for Fiji in defense while the presence of Luse Kotobalavu in mid court played a pivotal role.

Neiliko and Waqanidrola worked tirelessly throughout the match as they disrupted a spirited Samoan attack on numerous occasions by making crucial turnovers which could have turned into points for Samoa.

The Samoans looked a different side from the second quarter as they were determined to outplay the Fijians in front of their home fans but the defensive effort of Waqanidrola and Neiliko stood out.

63 test veteran Waqanidrola said that understanding of the game is vital.

Fiji will meet Cook Islands at 5 this afternoon after the Cooks beat Papua New Guinea 62-56 last night.

Meanwhile the Fiji under 21 side defeated Vanuatu in their second match 65-31 and they will play again at 1pm today.
