The Vodafone Fiji 7s team has beaten New Zealand in their first pool match of the NZ 7s tournament 12-7.
This is a great boost for the team as it fought hard in the see-saw battle to win the match against the hosts in Wellington.
Emosi Mulevoro scored the first try although Fiji was down one man after Samisoni Viriviri was yellow carded.
Fiji led NZ 5-0 at half time.
Going into the second half, New Zealand's Sherwin Stowers who is back from injury brushed past missed tackles to score giving some hope to the NZ fans at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington.
New Zealand also took the lead 7-5 with a successful conversion.
However this was short-lived as Samisoni Viriviri ran almost 50 metres to score a brilliant individual try.
The final score again Fiji 12 NZ 7.
Fiji's next game is against France at 5.35pm today and we will then take on Spain in the last pool match at 7.28 tonight.
Meanwhile Fiji's most successful rugby coach and former Fiji and Australian rep, Ilivasi Tabua had predicted that Fiji will beat NZ.
Tabua said this is great for the team but Fiji needs to improve it's one on one tackles.
He said every tackle counts as missed tackles will result in the opposition scoring against us.
There were a few lost opportunities for Fiji against NZ due to aimless kicking.
Tabua said you cannot do this against the in-form teams.
Other top teams that have remained unbeaten after the second round of pool matches include Samoa who defeated Tonga 31-7, Australia has sent Kenya out of the Cup quarters with a 24-0 win, Canada beat USA 29-12 while South Africa defeated Portugal 27-5.
In the first round of games, Samoa defeated Kenya 24-12, Australia thrashed Tonga 33-5, South Africa beat Wales 26-0 while defending champions England beat Portugal 36-7.
If all goes well for Fiji in pool play, they are expected to meet either Scotland, Argentina, Canada or USA in the quarters and if Fiji progresses to the semis they are expected to play South Africa, England, Samoa or Australia.
