Fiji can be self sufficient on producing milk locally for local consumption in the next few years, if dairy farmers continue to receive assistance from government.
Spokesperson for the Naitasiri Dairy Farmers Association Vijendra Prakash said the farm gate price for milk per litre has increased from 58 cents to 82 cents after an agreement with Rewa Dairy last week.
Prakash said this is good news for dairy farmers which they should take advantage of.
The interim government had allocated $2.1 million for assistance to the dairy industry in this year’s National Budget.
Fiji is currently importing about 80% of milk per year for local consumption which costs close to $40 million.
