Fiji is bleeding to death since the 1987 coup as far as human capital is concerned.

Those were the words of Professor Ron Duncan who is a senior Lecturer at USP while speaking at a Public Forum this morning at Marine Lecture Theatre.

Duncan was referring to many Fiji citizens who have migrated to Australia, New Zealand and other developed countries for greener pastures.

Duncan also stressed that customs duty imposed by the Qarase government in November 2006 on imported foods should be removed as he made some suggestion for quick economic recovery. He said that the interim government should focus more on growth rather than obstacles and agrees that corruption has considerable social and economic costs which may be partly responsible for Fiji's economy not performing well for a long time.

He said the resource owners now should be allowed to manage their own assets and income streams.
