The Telecom Fiji Warriors proved too strong for Samoa A in the World Rugby Pacific Challenge final, while Tonga A claimed third place ahead of Junior Japan.
The Warriors scored five tries and 36 unanswered points against Samoa A to lift the trophy in front of a 4,000‑strong crowd at the ANZ Stadium last night.
The Warriors ran out wearing black armbands in memory of those who lost their lives during Cyclone Winston and as a mark of respect for former team‑mate Iosefo Bele Tabalala, who tragically passed away during last year’s tournament.
Fiji scored twice before the break through a penalty try and a try from winger Lepani Raiyala to lead 16‑0.
Fellow winger Nacani Wakaya added a third after 54 minutes before two tries in the space of three minutes near the end from second‑row Mataiasi Ucutabua and centre Frederick Hicks made for a final scoreline of 36‑0.
The Warriors will now prepare to play Uruguay next month.
