Civil Aviation Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola stated that the Fiji Times newspaper has incorrectly reported that a Virgin Australia Boeing 777 and an Air New Zealand B767 aircraft narrowly avoiding a mid air collision in Fiji's airspace two weeks ago.

Ratu Inoke confirmed in a statement that the preliminary report available to the ministry suggested that the two aircrafts were at all times under the watchful radar of Fiji's Air Traffic Control and were not in any risk whatsoever of a collision.

He added both aircrafts were in constant contact with Nadi's Air Traffic Control during their movements into and out of Fiji's controlled airspace.

The incident was subjected to standard ICAO investigation requirements by Fiji's aeronautical authority.

He said it is reiterated that air safety remains a priority consideration for the ministry.

And it will remain so.

He said the incident was reported to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Fiji Islands under its Mandatory Occurrence Reporting System and was duly investigated.
