The American Embassy today sought increased access for Fiji sugar into the US market by partnering with the International Sugar Trade Coalition.

US Secretary for Agriculture Ed Schafer announced they will lobby to re-assigning the unused portion of the 2007-08 cane sugar overall allotment quantity to Mexico.

The Embassy told Schaffer that it was concerned that USDA's reassignment of the unused cane sugar quota exclusively to Mexico discriminates against Fiji's access as well as those of other members of the Sugar Coalition to the Sugar market.

Meanwhile the Embassy is working closely with the International Sugar Trade Coalition to safeguard Fiji's sugar exports to the US in light of developments taking place in Europe with regards to Fiji's sugar export to the EU.
