The interim prime minister said Fiji is safer than some Australian cities following comments by News Limited that Australians living in and intending to visit Fiji are deeply troubled.
In an exclusive interview with Fijivillage, Commodore Bainimarama said he is surprised to hear the statements made by the News Limited in Australia which have been widely reported locally and internationally.
He said the truth of the matter is that according to a poll conducted by family travel magazine, Out and About with Kids, Fiji was rated as the safest holiday destination after 25.9 percent of the Australians gave the green light to Fiji for holidays.
News Limited, the owners of the Fiji Times, also said on Wednesday that it is in discussions with the office of Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith to examine options for diplomatic solutions to the crisis as well as security arrangements to safeguard the welfare of the company's 175 employees at the Fiji Times.
Commodore Bainimarama has reacted that none of the media outlets are under threat.
When approached by Fijivillage on whether the Fiji Times staff are under any sort of threat and whether discussions are underway to make security arrangements for 175 employees, Fiji Times editor Netani Rika referred all queries to News Limited.
Rika told Fijivillage that he can only comment on the editorial issues as other corporate decisions are made by the executives at News Limited.
