The Australian government said Fiji's Constitution could be amended if parliament is recalled with all political parties involved.

Australian's Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Islands affairs, Duncan Kerr told the AAP that any change to the electoral system should not be made without the endorsement of parliament which was shut down after the military takeover on December 5th.

Kerr said if there is agreement across all the political actors, parliament could be recalled to permit the passage of the change.

The New Zealand government also said the potential move to get rid of race-based electorates would breach Commodore Bainimarama's vow to stage the poll under the existing constitution.
