The country needs more senior doctors and specialists, however, getting more doctors from abroad is on hold due to the current situation in the country.

The Director Curative Health Services Doctor Margaret Cornelius said Fiji has more junior doctors, however, we need senior doctors such as heart, eye and child specialists.

Dr Cornelius said the Health Ministry officials will go overseas to screen more doctors for Fiji once the political situation improves in the country.

Meanwhile, she is also calling on people to understand the work carried out by doctors and nurses in the country.

She made the comments on a talkback show on our Sister Station Radio Sargam yesterday afternoon when many listeners called in to complain about doctors and nurses having attitude problems.

Dr Cornelius said many doctors and nurses work overtime and weekends, do not get paid well, do not have a social life and do not get to meet with their families.

She said patients should also talk to the doctors or nurses politely instead of complaining about how long they have been waiting for.
