A much more confident and well polished Digicel Fiji 7s team hammered Cook Islands 55-0 in their second pool game this afternoon.
Fiji's tries came from co-captain Vereniki Goneva, who scored the first with just 44 seconds in the game, two each to Osea Kolinisau, co-captain Etonia Naba, Peni Rokodiva Junior and Filimoni Botitu.
Fiji piled up the points to ensure that they still top the pool after playing Samoa tonight. Peni Rokodiva Junior showed some great rugby skills which resulted in a number of Fiji's try against Cook Islands.
Speaking to Fijivillage from the Westpac Stadium, Digicel Fiji 7s coach Iliesa Tanivula said Fiji failed to settle in their opening match as they went down to USA by 15 points to 10.
Tanivula added with determination shown against the Cook Islanders, he is confident the boys are ready to meet Pacific rivals Samoa in their last pool game.
Tanivula adds that his run-on-team in the game against Samoa will be announced straight after they warm up later this afternoon but he is expected to retain the same line up as in the game against the Cook Islands.
Meanwhile, the biggest upset on the first day of the NZ International 7s tournament was recorded in the last hour when hosts and defending champions, New Zealand went down to Wales by 28-17.
This is Wales first ever win against New Zealand in the 7s game.
New Zealand suffered a huge blow after Fijian Tomasi Cama Junior was handed a red card in the first few minutes of the game and will now miss the next match against Niue. Captain DJ Forbes got a yellow card and sat out for two minutes.
Fiji still needs to beat Samoa in their final pool game to reach the Cup quarterfinals.
Fiji's last pool match is at 8:12pm against Samoa.
Meanwhile in other matches played so far at the Westpac Stadium, England with Fijian Isoa Damudamu beat France 26 points to 10, Canada caused an upset by holding Argentina to a 17-all draw, Samoa beat Cook Islands 12-5, South Africa thumped Scotland 24-0, Kenya beat Tonga 21-14, Australia beat Niue 22-17, England beat Canada 34-7, Argentina beat France by 33-21 and Samoa beat USA 26-17.
