The Digicel Fiji 7s team got off to a good start in their defence of the Hong Kong 7s title last night.
In their opening match they thrashed Thailand by 82 points to 7.
Setefano Cakau scored a hat trick and Waisale Beci and Niumaia Rokobuli two apiece, as Fiji scored 12 tries to open with an 82 7 victory against Thailand the second largest winning margin in the history of the World Series.
Fiji's toughest opponent in Pool C, the Adelaide Cup finalists USA won a closely fought match 17 10 against Portugal to currently sit second in the pool.
Meanwhile in other first round games last night, in Pool A Samoa got their Hong Kong campaign off to a winning start with a convincing 40 12 win against Italy while Argentina started with a hard fought 19 12 win against Russia.
In Pool B, New Zealand defeated Chinese Taipei by 59-5 and then France edged Scotland 12 7.
In Pool D, China put in a superb first half effort to lead Australia 12 7 early on, to the delight of the home crowd, but two tries by Brackin Karauria Henry helped the Wallaby Seven run out 45 12 winners.
Canada also registered win in this pool with a 12-10 victory over Tonga.
In Pool E, Champions of 2002 to 2006, England got their challenge this year off to a winning start against home favourites Hong Kong by 45-0.
In the other game in the pool, 2009 Rugby World Cup Sevens winners Wales saw off the stiff challenge of Asia's number one side, Japan, to win 12 10.
In Pool F, Kenya got their Hong Kong challenge off to a winning start with a 51 7 win against Korea and in the final match of the day, reigning World Series champions South Africa played first of three all African ties in the group, Cecil Afrika crossing twice in a 28 15 win against Zimbabwe.
The second day's of pool games at the Hong Kong 7s tournament will start today at 3:30pm with the opening match between Argentina up against Italy.
Fiji's next pool match will be against Portugal at 6:26pm and then in their last pool match at 10:50pm Fiji take on USA.
The first six top teams from each pool will qualify for the Cup quarter finals while the other two will come as the best runners-up.
