Fiji 7s team advances to quarterfinals
Fiji proved too good for the Waisale Serevi coached Papua New Guinea team after they beat them 41-nil and the Emosi Vucago captained side went on to beat Kenya in their last pool game last night by 21-7.
Fiji will now go on to meet hosts Australia, after they clinched their place in the Cup quarters as pool winners with a ruthless 36 0 win against USA and then a thrilling 17 12 win against England.
While the English could not recover from their opening day loss against Cup qualifiers USA and have now dropped to the Bowl competition.
Six tries by newcomer Sampie Mastriet helped defending champions South Africa top their pool by drawing at the death against impressive Samoa, while Mikaele Pesamino scorched over for eight tries so far for the islanders, the leading mark in the competition.
Series leaders New Zealand also made serene progress, winning all three of their matches for the concession of just one try, in their 47 7 victory against closest pool rivals Argentina.
Looking at the Cup quarter finals this afternoon, Fiji will meet Australia at 2:58pm.
In other games, New Zealand takes on Samoa at 2:36pm, Wales takes on USA at 3:20pm and South Africa will meet Argentina at 3:42pm.
The winner from the game between New Zealand and Samoa will meet the winner from the game between Fiji and Australia.
Meanwhile, winner between Wales and USA will meet the winner from the game between Australia Sevens defending champions, South Africa and Argentina.
The semifinals kick off at 6:26pm and the Cup final is at 8:50pm.
