The past 5 years results of the Digicel Fiji 7's team in the Hong Kong 7's gives the team an early edge against the other 24 teams taking part in the IRB 7's series biggest tournament.

Since 2005 when Fiji defeated New Zealand for the Melrose Cup in Hong Kong, they have appeared in the final on four occasions winning two of those finals, the last time was under the leadership of current coach Iliesa Tanivula in 2009 with Jerry Burotu, Osea Kolinisau and Waqabaca Kotobalavu also part of that team.

His assistant Joe Savou has also reached the final with the side that lost to England in 2006 and Samoa in 2007 and the likes of co captain Dale Tonawai and Setefano Cakau were in that losing team.

New Zealand is next with three finals appearances since 2005 but only managed a win in 2008 when they defeated South Africa who have yet to taste a win in Hong Kong.

Current defending champions Samoa played the final and beat Fiji in 2008 and last year defeated New Zealand.

The Fiji 7's team arrived last night in Hong Kong and will hold their first training run today.

Fiji will play against Malayasia at 9.14pm on Friday in their opening pool game.
