The Fiji Rugby Union said that the Vodafone Fiji 7s players will receive more than what they were receiving under the previous Digicel sponsorship when they are fully contracted to the FRU.

The players are currently getting $25,000 bonus for an IRB 7s tournament Cup win, $15,000 for coming second and $10,000 for reaching the cup semifinal.

According to the previous Digicel sponsorship, the team received $66,000 for a tournament win, $23,000 for cup runners up, $19,000 for reaching the cup semifinals and $15,000 if the team loses out in the cup quarterfinals.

While the current payout is less than the previous Digicel bonus payment, FRU board member responsible for sponsorships, Baljeet Singh said there will be other benefits by October which include contracts, insurance cover for players and other incentives.

When we asked him for details, Singh said they will not reveal anything as yet and they are still awaiting confirmation from the consortium of sponsors and the list of 7s players to be contracted under FRU.

Singh added that FRU has also considered the long term welfare of the players.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr Berlin Kafoa revealed that one of the benefits in kind provided which has never been done before is the players insurance.
