More cane farmers are returning to the Northern division, to continue farming.

This was revealed today by the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, in his official address while opening the Macuata Provincial Council Meeting at Naduri village, adding that some sugar cane farmers in the North had moved to the Central Division after their leases had expired under ALTA.

Ratu Epeli said however many are slowly returning to the North, as a result of the Macuata landowners agreeing to the renewal of land leases.

Ratu Epeli while not releasing the exact number of farmers, who have returned, said he has been informed about this trend and said this is encouraging news.

He said the government will encourage the Macuata landowners to assist farmers in renewing their leases, which will also boost the Government's Northern Development Program which started in 2007.

He also told the Provincial Council to provide their annual reports for accountability and transparency.

The meeting continues this afternoon.
