Many farmers in the west are seeking advice on cash crops which can generate income every three months.

Assistant agricultural officer western Vasundra Kumar said Lautoka is witnessing a change of farmers venturing into agricultural projects with a strong focus on cash crop diversification.

She said they are trying to get more cane farmers and other farmers to plant cash crops in between, so while waiting for sugar cane to mature they can harvest crops such as capsicum, eggplant, pawpaw and lettuce which is of high demand in the market.

She said these farmers can supply their produce both to local and overseas markets, which will also reduce the importation of vegetables from overseas.

Kumar said that the Ministry will be going ahead with its $20,000 project where crops like basil, rock melon, capsicum and lettuce will be planted for supply to hotels.
