Cane farmers have been encouraged to grab hold of the opportunity and increase the volume of sugarcane that they can produce as the price of sugar is at an all time high now.

Permanent Secretary for Sugar Parmesh Chand said that due to the increase in the demand for ethanol, the price of sugar has increased and at the moment the industry is steady as well as being viable with the selling price being over US$2,000 per ton in some countries.

Chand said that for some time now, Fiji's sugar industry has been struggling however with the increase in price and recent upgrade in the sugar mills, effective and efficient sugar production is not a problem.

Meanwhile, Chand is also encouraging people who have access to land to explore the possibility of venturing out into sugarcane farming.

He said the government is working closely with the Native Lands Trust Board and the landowners to identify as much land as possible for reissuance of leases for sugarcane farming as well as other forms of agriculture.
