Rakiraki farmers have raised concern that the Penang Sugar mill has not started crushing for this season and thousands of tonnes of harvested cane are lying unused at the mill.
National Farmers Union, National President Sanjit Maharaj said many farmers have already brought cane cutters from outer islands and from as far as Suva to work their cane.
FSC CEO Deo Sharan said there is only one thousand tonnes of cane in the mill and has assured that the mill will start crushing by 3pm today.
Penang Mill was scheduled to start crushing last Thursday.
