The newly assigned interim Minister for Sugar stressed that come next year's crushing season, the Fiji Sugar Cooperation will have the Quality Cane Payment System in place.
Joketani Cokanasiga said major challenges lie ahead to convince farmers, but it is a step that must be taken, meaning that farmers will be paid on the quality of cane and not tonnage.
Cokanasiga added that despite some setbacks after the EU funds were withheld, the Mill upgrade works are on target to bring about the much talked about efficiency in the industry.
Meanwhile, the interim Sugar Minister stressed that Industry stakeholders are not deterred by threats from the EU to withdraw further subsidies to Fiji is elections are not held by March 2009.
