We have to increase our fares so that we can survive to cater for those in the outer islands.
These are the sentiments of Fiji Ship Owners Association president Durga Prasad on the struggle ship owners are facing with the increase in fuel prices.
Speaking to Fijivillage, Prasad said that they don't want to resort to stopping their services and have to increase charges.
Prasad said that they had been negotiating with the ministries concerned and have put forward submissions for an increase to the Prices and Incomes Board and so far their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
He reassured that they have no plans to take drastic action or hold any vessels back, because they know that a lot of those living in the outer islands will be affected.
The latest increase in fuel prices came into effect on Friday 27th June, 2008.
