A family of seven of Howell Road in Suva who lost everything in a fire last Tuesday is currently living in a tent next to their burnt house.

The eldest in the family is 69-year-old Shiu Mati who is a beggar while the youngest is her 15-year-old granddaughter. All their items were destroyed in the fire and they do not have proper water supply.

The family was sheltering under a tarpaulin from last week ansd the tent was provided by the Ministry of Women earlier this week.

One of the family members, 28-year-old Sandeep Roy says they need more clothes and food.

Roy says the family is surviving through the assistance of the Ministry of Women, the Latter Day Saints Church in Tamavua and some individuals.

He also says some people have sent some items for them from Korolevu.

Year 9 student, Shivani Roy who is Sandeep’s sister, says she is not able to go to school because she has nothing left.

Minister Akbar has provided them with a proper tent, mattresses, pillows, blankets, clothes, cooking gas and stove and utensils.

The Ministry has also liaised with Nadi Rotary Club and RC Manubhai to organise similar assistance to be provided to the affected families.

The Ministry is also calling out on the potential donors to come forward and help these families.

The Ministry has also assisted 31-year-old Mereseini Veqali who was at work when the fire started. They also lost everything in the fire.

Veqali says they are currently living at a church member’s house.
