A family of Balata Tavua lost everything in a fire yesterday which started from a cane farm.

National Fire Authority Tavua confirmed receiving a call yesterday afternoon and upon attending they found a 12 acre cane farm, a nearby lean to house and a bure stocked with manure on fire.

Fire fighters from Ba also assisted in controlling the blaze however, the bure and home were extensively damaged with an estimated 800 tons of sugarcane also burnt.

The occupants of the house managed to escape unharmed.

The National Fire Authority has called on farmers to take extra precautions while burning cane.
