A close tussle is expected in the boys and girls divisions of the 2014 Coca Cola Games as a number of medals are at stake on the tracks and the field in the next few hours.
Defending boy’s division champions, Marist Brothers High School are now leading the Fijivillage medal tally with 3 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze.
Marist won gold in the junior boys javelin through Alipate Wesele while Tafa Varea took gold in the intermediate boys discus event.
Simione Savu of Marist also won gold in the senior boys long Jump.
The boys from Tailevu, Queen Victoria School are in second place with 2 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze.
Suva Grammar School is in third place with 2 gold and 1 silver.
Xavier, Levuka Public School and Natabua High are next with 1 gold and 1 silver each.
Sailosi Falewai of QVS took gold in the junior boy's shot put event with a record throw of 16.56 metres.
Falewai broke the 21 year old record held since Jone Cavubati in 1993 which stood at 15.68 metres.
And waking up at 3 every morning for studies and training has paid off for Queen Victoria School athlete Kuliniasi Baleisomosomo after he won gold in the sub junior boys shot put event.
This is also a new event so Baleisomosomo set a new record of 12.64 metres.
He said his everyday routine includes studying from half past 3 until 5am.
Baleisomosomo said he starts his training at 5.30am and finishes at 6am which has definitely paid off.
The two gold medals for Grammar came from Farisiko Mualivu in the Intermediate 1,500 metres event and Inia Sili in the senior 1,500 metres.
Mualivu said despite the injuries, he still managed to win today.
In the girls division, Xavier College and Saint Joseph's Secondary School are tied in first place with 2 gold each.
Xavier's gold medals have been won by Sereseini Vesoka.
She won gold in the senior girls triple jump and the senior girls long jump event.
Vesoka said she had to sacrifice her time with her friends to get to where she is now.
She dedicated her win to a special person who has been with her from the start.
The two gold medals for Saint Joseph's Secondary were won by Kelera Sing.
Sing won gold in the intermediate girls long jump and intermediate girls triple jump events.
Defending champions Jasper Williams High School are now in second place with 1 gold and 2 silver.
Natabua is in third place with 1 gold and 1 silver.
Josefa Matau of Natabua High School broke the record of the boys sub junior long jump.
His record jump was 5.47 metres.
The old record was 5.35m which was set in 1988.
The 4x400 metres relay heats are currently underway.
The 100 metres heats will start at about 5.25pm today, the 400 metres finals kick off at 7.25 tonight.
