The Fiji Trade Union Congress (FTUC) has strongly hit out at the decision taken by the Public Service Commission (PSC) that all civil servants hired from this month will be on a three year contract and the automatic pay increments through the Cost of Living Adjustment for civil servants will be scrapped.
General Secretary Felix Anthony said the Chairman of the PSC does not have the powers to make such decisions on his own and they will strongly oppose this move.
Anthony said they will negotiate with the Interim Government on this matter and will try to reach a positive resolution.
Meanwhile, the Fijian Teachers Association General Secretary Maika Namudu said the move will be disastrous for the country adding that civil servants will not take the move lying down.
PSC Chairman Rishi Ram earlier said they have decided to take this step to ensure greater efficiency in the civil service as these contracts will be performance based.
