The Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association says they will try to ensure that all school zones follow the qualifying standards for next year’s Coca-Cola Games.

When questioned by Fijivillage on creating a level playing field and having one qualifying standard for all, Association General Secretary Vuli Waqa admits that is the ideal situation going forward.

Only Suva Zone 1, Suva Zone 2, Tailevu Zone and Taveuni Zone are using the qualifying standards while the remaining zones are using automatic qualification for the 1st and 2nd place getters for events.

When questioned on why a big zone like Lautoka is not following the qualifying standards while a smaller zone like Taveuni is following the standards, Vuli Waqa says it is about time that Lautoka Zone follows the qualifying standards.

We also asked if this system will be implemented from next year.

With just one hour remaining for the 2017 Coca-Cola Games to kick off, some of the top athletes from Natabua, Marist Brothers High School, Lelean Memorial School and Ratu Kadavulevu School will now be aiming for the 100 metres Senior Boys title after the disqualification of Queen Victoria School sprinter and defending champion, Ilaitia Waqa.

Shane Tuvusa from Natabua High School, Keasi Naidroka and Tony Lemeki of Marist, Sailosi Tubuilagi of RKS and Netani Vakayalia of Lelean are some of the athletes with the fastest manual times from the different zones.

But also expect surprises by some athletes from other schools who want to make their presence felt and really stamp their mark in the games.

The 100 metres heats will start at 2.15pm today.

You can catch the live commentary of the 100 metres heats from 3pm today on our sister station, Viti FM on 92.2FM.
