The Sugar and General Workers Union is now saying that the Fiji Sugar Corporation workers strike action can take place at any time.

Union General Secretary, Felix Anthony is again making the strike threat as he claims that the union members are being intimidated by the management.

Anthony said that over the weekend, workers were required to fill a form indicating if they are going on strike.

He alleges that the workers have been threatened with termination if they go on strike while retired workers have been offered 5 year contracts.

Anthony also claimed that the management has advised workers that FSC will get workers from India to operate the mills when the strike happens.

FSC Chief Executive, Abdul Khan said he will not make any comments.

Meanwhile Attorney General and Minister for Industry and Trade, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the government will ensure that the 200 thousand people depending on the sugar industry are not affected.

Sayed-Khaiyum hopes good sense will prevail.

FSC workers have already received a 5.3 percent pay increase however Anthony said this is insufficient.

When Fijivillage questioned Felix Anthony on the level of increase demanded by the union, Anthony said he will not reveal the amount and this will only be known when FSC comes to the negotiation table.
