In an attempt to increase cane production, the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) is planning to acquire more land for planting more sugarcane.

Initial discussions were held between the Sugarcane Growers Council, FSC and other stakeholders last week on this issue.

More details are expected to be released later this week as it is only at the planning stages while the financing of this project is also an issue.

Meanwhile, it was earlier revealed that the devaluation of the Fiji dollar by 20 percent is expected to increase sugar and molasses exports by $52 million this year and will also benefit cane farmers as there will be an increase in the cane price for 2009.
