The Sugar Ministry has confirmed that some companies from Fiji have been illegally exporting sugar to overseas which has resulted in the shortage of sugar in the local market.
Permanent Secretary, Manasa Vaniqi said the Fiji Sugar Cooperation is handling the case and it has been directed to investigate the matter.
According to Vaniqi, some companies who buy sugar from the FSC have been selling it to overseas market.
Fijivillage also spoke to some shopping outlets in relation to the matter.
Rajendra's Food Town in Suva has confirmed that they are rationing the sale of sugar to its customers.
The MH supermarket in Sigatoka now has sufficient stock of sugar however according to the Manager they do not receive the supply of sugar on time.
