The Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited has today spoken out about the stench supposedly coming from the Ba river, which people who live in Rarawai and surround areas, have claimed is caused by the Rarawai Mill.

Chief Executive Officer, Deo Saran confirms the pollution ponds at the Rarawai mill has been heavily loaded with stale material during and after the floods and there is some foul emission from the ponds.

Saran said the decomposition and degradation of stale material together with cleaning chemicals sent for treatment at the ponds has created the problem.

He adds the corporation is doing all it can to minimize the foul smell.

Meanwhile, the Ba Health Inspector, Jeet Narayan confirmed to Fijivillage News on Tuesday that no sample of waste material has been found in the Ba river, however they will continue with their inspection.

A retired school teacher from Rarawai, Dhirendra Singh earlier said the smell is unbearable.
