The flash floods which ravaged the sugar cane belt in the Western and Northern divisions are expected to have a huge impact on the sugar industry this year.

Fiji Sugar Cooperation (FSC) CEO Deo Saran told Fijivillage that their teams are undertaking an extensive assessment to ascertain the extent of damages to the sugar cane fields.

He said they expect to have a report by mid week on the extent of damages and its impact it will have on the sugar production this year.

Following the assessments the FSC is expected to downgrade its forecast for the tonnage of sugar to be carted to the mills and inevitably the sugar production for 2009.

The cooperation would also have to establish the tonnage of sugar which would now have to be imported to meet the sugar quota and to how much would have to be imported to meet the local demand.

A report is expected to be tabled in cabinet.
