The Fiji Sugar Cooperation is expected to make further losses this year with losses already standing at around $19.4 million up till May.

In a statement this afternoon, Agriculture Permanent Secretary Dr. Richard Beyer said with huge losses anticipated, they are seeking to address the concerns of the FSC and all stakeholders involved in the sugar industry.

Dr. Beyer said they are examining in which synergy can be achieved through greater cooperation between the Extension service in the Department of Agriculture and other services to ensure there is less duplication and greater use of scarce resources to get the whole sector moving.

He said the production in the agriculture sector has risen significantly since the beginning of 2008 and hoped that the strategies put in place could be extended to the sugar sector.
