The Fiji Sugar Cooperation is confident that a feasibility study being conducted into ethanol production by Japan based company Sojitz Corporation will show ethanol to be a viable industry.
FSC Acting CEO Deo Saran confirmed that the study was expected to be completed in the next 2 months and they are optimistic that Sojitz Company will be convinced to set up its proposed $36m ethanol plant here in Fiji.
Saran also said with technical expertise from Japan, there would be a guaranteed market for the ethanol produced in Fiji.
The FSC signed a memorandum of understanding with Sojitz Cooperation and the plant, once operational, is expected to earn around $20m by producing ethanol from molasses, a by-product in sugar production.
The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2009.
