The Fiji Rugby Union has confirmed that it is working towards bidding for an IRB World 7s tournament to be held in Fiji.

This was revealed to Fijivillage by FRU Chairman Filimoni Waqabaca and said they have started work from last year.

Waqabaca said the FRU is planning another International 7s tournament this year and is in dialogue with other stakeholders that can help them address the areas of weakness identified.

Waqabaca added they have to improve on how they organize such tournaments as this was an issue raised by IRB during the Fiji International 7s last year.

Meanwhile, International Rugby Board Sevens Manager Beth Coalter believes that Fiji stands a fair chance in hosting an HSBC World Sevens Series leg.

Coalter who was assessing the International 7s in Fiji last year says there were some issues to be ironed out, some of the organisation needs to be improved and the FRU needs to have good infrastructure with the organization of a tournament.

The hosting rights of the tournament’s series will end in 2016 which will then give Fiji the chance to contest the hosting of one of the IRB Sevens World Series legs and the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens.
