The Fiji Rugby Union has announced plans to lodge a formal complaint about the referee who handed the side a world record five yellow cards in their test against Italy.

Fiji was briefly reduced to 11 men in the first half of the 37-31 loss when four players were sin binned during eight minutes of mayhem.

Another yellow card followed in the second half of Sunday’s game.

FRU acting chief executive Berlin Kafoa said the cards cost the team the match but argued they resulted more from overzealous officiating by the Welsh referee than poor discipline.

Kafoa said a complaint will be submitted to the International Rugby Board.

The Flying Fijians will face Romania at 4am this Sunday.

Meanwhile, in the other international test matches this Sunday, Argentina takes on Italy at 3am, Australia meet Scotland at 7am, Wales meets Tonga at 8.30am, South Africa meets France at 8am, while New Zealand meets Ireland next Monday at 3am.
