The Fiji Rugby Union has specified why they failed to meet one of the IRB recommendations after a review of the Union in May last year which resulted in IRB suspending their funding for Fiji.

FRU Acting CEO Dr Berlin Kafoa said one of the IRB conditions with regards to the IRB funding was for former FASANOC President Vidya Lakhan to be an observer at the Board.

Dr Kafoa added the Board does not agree with the condition that Lakhan be appointed as an observer to the Board because the IRB did not consult with FRU before making the decision.

Dr Kafoa also said the FRU reserves the right to determine whether an observer is needed and FRU has the right to determine who the observer should be.

In a media conference on Wednesday, FRU Board member Dr Esther Williams said there is no need for an observer as they are confident they can carry out the necessary changes needed to take the institution forward.

When questioned on this issue, Vidya Lakhan said he was approached by IRB.

The IRB is expected to carry out another review in May.
