Good news for rugby in Fiji as the Board of the Fiji Rugby Union has finally signed a sponsorship deal.

In a statement released by the FRU last night, Chairman Filimoni Waqabaca confirms that after careful consideration, a lucrative five year sponsorship contract has been signed.

Waqabaca said given the importance of rugby as a unifying force in the nation, it is critical that they secure a sponsorship that will strengthen and develop the status of Fiji rugby further.

Details about the partnership will be announced later.

Meanwhile, Digicel revealed last Friday that it has commenced legal proceedings against the Fiji Rugby Union to protect its contractual rights to the Fiji Rugby properties which it has sponsored since 2006.

CEO Maurice McCarthy said that Digicel understands how important rugby is to the people of Fiji and the company wants to ensure that it continues to help support the growth of the sport.

We have sent questions to the FRU Chairman on the sponsorship agreement.

Waqabaca is yet to confirm the name of the rugby sponsors and value of the sponsorship.

Stay with us as we will have more later today.
