The Fiji Roads Authority is now ensuring that temporary road closures to allow marches in the Central Business District in Suva are avoided as they cause major traffic congestions.
FRA Chief Executive John Hutchinson says they have declined the application made by the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement for a temporary road closure through Suva’s CBD on the 10th of next month.
Hutchinson says it is important to understand that marches through this route on a Saturday morning would cause significant disruption, congestion and overcrowding to the general public.
The FRA confirms declining similar requests from other groups requesting temporary road closures for this period.
FRA says it is more than happy to consider the FWRM’s request provided it does not add to congestion and overcrowding by using the suggested alternative route.
Hutchinson says the FRA has a responsibility to ensure the safety and well‑being of all road users and pedestrians.
He says an alternative route was suggested to the NGO who have chosen to ignore the suggestion.
Fijivillage has received numerous calls from motorists during temporary road closures in Suva as it has affected thousands of workers and students.
We have continued to raise the issue on why the main entry to Suva City is closed during peak traffic periods that causes major traffic jam issues affecting many people.
We also contacted the FWRM about the decision and why they have opted not to take the suggested alternative route. They are yet to respond.
