Keeping those civil servants over the age of 55 on a contract basis does not make sense.
This is the reaction from the Fiji Public Service Association (FPSA) General Secretary Rajeshwar Singh after the PSC revealed that while some civil servants would have to be retired immediately, others may be retained on a contract basis in specialized fields.
Meanwhile, the FPSA has instructed its lawyers to file for a stay order on the implementation of the retirement age at 55, after the Appeals Court ruled yesterday that the PSC can reduce the retirement age from 60 to 55.
Meanwhile, the PSC is now drawing up a list of civil servants above the age of 55 who will be retired gradually over the next few months.
