FICAC lands 23 convictions
That is the message from Fiji Commission Against Corruption Deputy Commission George Langman who revealed thet FICAC has dealt with 23 convictions with 41 cases pending in court since its inception in 2007.
Langman while speaking at the International Day against Corruption celebrations in Suva this morning said that the main cause of corruption in the society is people being ungrateful of what they currently earn in life.
Langman said FICAC will be addressing the growing number of corruption cases with specialized staff from overseas as well as locally, however he has called on the public to assist their work through reporting corruption.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said over the years, the society has accepted bribery and corruption as a norm which has deprived the public of quality services and ultimately creates a black economy.
He said it is essential that people know how to identify the different forms of corruption and report them.
The Attorney General added that Fiji has recently developed a culture of greed highlighting the recent Price control by the Commerce Commission where supermarkets did not cooperate in giving the real cost of getting food on the shelves.
Next year FICAC will be reviewed by the United States and Bangladesh as part of its peer review and continue its outreach programmes in various public departments, schools, rural communities and churches.
