FICAC charges Immigration official
It is alleged that Josateki Toga accepted $500 as well as a new Nokia mobile phone from a Stephen Mallerich, for uplifting travel history of Mohammad Fanam Ali from the Immigration Department.
FICAC officers yesterday arrested Toga from a restaurant in Nadi, where he was exchanging the documents and later last night they executed a search warrant and seized documents from Toga's resident.
He appeared in the Nadi Magistrate Court before Magistrate Saimoni Naivalu and his lawyer argued that the case should be thrown out and the organization is in contempt of court.
FICAC made an application for the accused to be remanded in custody as he resides in Nadi and may interfere with the witnesses however this was refused and Magistrate Naivalu granted him bail.
FICAC again made an application for a stay order to file a petition of appeal, due to the urgency of the matter and are appealing immediately, however this was also refused upon which FICAC informed the court that they will arrest Toga as soon as he steps out of the court because they found new evidence last night.
He is currently in FICAC custody and is being questioned.
Toga has been charged under FICAC's Bribery Promulgation.
