The Fiji Institute of Accountants believes that the interim government should further reduce the income tax threshold in the 2009 National Budget to ensure those in the lower salary bracket do not have to pay taxes and in-turn provide some relieve due to increasing cost of living.
Institute President Rajesh Sharma told Fijivillage that they also believe that tariffs on various items need to be reduced to cater for the poor.
Sharma said to balance off the reductions, the interim government should focus on improving tax collection as substantial amount of taxes are still unaccounted for and the state is losing out on the much needed revenue.
The 2009 National Budget will be announced by the Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama at 11am on Friday.
