With comments flooding in from non-government organisations and individuals regarding the deportation of Fiji Times Publisher Evan Hannah last Friday and media freedom, or the lack of it in Fiji, the Fiji Human Rights Commission has remained silent.
And SDL National Director Peceli Kinivuwai was also reported as saying that the FHRC only exists in name as its operations, in terms of dealing with human rights issues, are not alive.
When contacted this morning, FHRC chairperson Dr Shaista Shameem said she had no comment to make on these issues.
The FHRC said no comments on media freedom would be made due to the cordial meeting between the media council and the Interim Government.
Interim Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama at a meeting held with media heads yesterday reiterated that the Interim Government would uphold media freedom, adding that it is their constitutional duty to do so but reminding the people in attendance that with media freedom comes responsibility.
