The Fiji Human Rights Group in New Zealand has commended the decision taken by the Interim Government to finally look into the issue of paying compensation to the 2000 coup victims.

Group's Spokesperson, Santa Maharaj said the group had provided sanctuary at the the Lautoka Girmit Centre and has acted for many families who had fled their homes from Muaniveni and Dawasamu after the terrorism acts in their area.

Maharaj said they made a submission to the previous governments after the coup but after nothing eventuated, they made a submission to the Interim Government which has reacted positively. He said they are calling for a $5million compensation to be added in the 2009 budget.
