The Fiji Electricity Authority has put a proposal forward to the Commerce Commission to reactivate the fuel surcharge of 6.51 cents per unit that was scrapped in March last year.
Chief Executive Hasmukh Patel said a reason for the proposal put forward by FEA was the fact that the Authority had been running at a loss of about $4 million dollars for the past four months.
He added another reason is the fact that water levels at the Monasavu Dam are very low, stressing that it is very close to the critical level of 715 metres.
Patel confirmed that they are now awaiting word from the Commerce Commission, stressing that the final decision as to how much would be charged to consumers will be determined by the Commission.
The 6.51 cents fuel surcharge per unit imposed by FEA in 2007 was reduced to zero in March of last year.
