The Commerce Commission has announced an interim increase in tariffs for the Fiji Electricity Authority effective from September 1st, 2009 to August 31st, 2011.

The interim increase approved is an average of 3.2 cents per unit which is a 15 percent increase.

Chairman of the Commerce Commission, Dr Mahendra Reddy has assured customers that the tariff increase will not affect domestic life line consumers, those whose bills are $50 or less per month and all religious organisations, schools, street lights, and other NGO's approved to be exempted from the increase.

It was earlier noted that assuming that there will be no changes to consumption levels, there will be a 9 dollars increase for a power bill of 60 dollars a month, a 12 dollars increase for a bill of 80 dollars a month and a 15 dollars increase for a bill of 100 dollars.

Meanwhile, Dr. Reddy has also asked FEA to try and reduce its operating expenditure before the interim increase period comes to an end.
