While world oil prices are decreasing, it is still not known at this stage whether the Fiji Electricity Authority Fuel Surcharge rate will also decrease.

When asked on whether there is a possibility of the surcharge decreasing, FEA CEO Hasmukh Patel said the rate is calculated based on a framework approved by the Commerce Commission.

Patel said the FEA submits fuel surcharge rate calculations to the Commission as and when appropriate and the Commission makes the final decision and informs the public.

In June this year, the Commission had granted FEA an increase in the fuel surcharge rate from 2.83 cents per unit to 5.53 cents per unit due to escalating costs of fuel worldwide.

The Commerce Commission is expected to comment later today.
