The Fiji Cane Growers Association wants the Sugar Cane Growers Council election to be called in April as it has been alleged that Interim Sugar Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry has decided to postpone the elections to next year.
FCGA general secretary, Bala Dass said this decision was made in NFU National Executive meeting in Nadi yesterday. According to Dass the council's term expires end of next month and an election should be held.
Dass said the National Farmers Union are in control of the Growers council as out of 11 board members, nine are from NFU and only two are from FCGA.
He said if elections are not held this year, the association will write a letter to President, Ratu Josefa Iloilo informing him that majority of the sugarcane farmers want elections.
Meanwhile, NFU president, Jain Kumar said no decision has been made on the council elections yet.
