External examinations will soon be phased out as the Ministry of Education is reviewing the role of examinations in the school curriculum.

Education Minister Filipe Bole said that the Fiji Intermediate Examination, Fiji Junior Certificate and the Fiji Eighth Year Examination are being considered to be phased out.

Bole said the Ministry feels that the 3 examinations have outlived their purposes and Ministry officials are working out the strategies to phase out these national exams.

He said in place of these exams, the Ministry is developing other assessment methods to see how students progress through their education and successfully complete it.

He said FILNA is a test which assess the levels of achievement of classes 4,5 and 8 in language and maths while for Fiji Junior, 50% of the mark comes from the assessment of Form 3 work internally assessed by teachers.

He said they are still working on the matter and will soon decide when to phase out the 3 exams.
