The people of Fiji can expect a new mobile service in the next three months, as the new mobile company Digicel was yesterday given their license by the Interim Government.

Digicel collected its license and handed over a cheque for 10.25 million US dollars to the Interim Communications Minister Tom Rickets, who in return said that today marks the beginning of a liberalization process initiated by the Interim Government and this will end a long term monopoly on mobile telecommunications services in the country.

Under the license agreement, Digicel will start operations formally from October 1st and they expect wider coverage and competition immediately.
